Is It Safe To Do Yoga During Pregnancy?

i’ve been doing yoga for a while but i stopped when i found out i was pregnant, i didn’t think to ask my gyn because i figured it was obvious to not do it. but i would like to start again. i’m only 11 weeks so is there a higher risk of miscarriage if i do yoga? or are you not supposed to do it at all?

Yoga can actually be very beneficial in pregnancy, but it is best to go to an instructor who is experienced in teaching pre-natal yoga, as not all postures are safe or comfortable. He/she will be able to guide you. Enjoy!

I took yoga a lot throughout my life and started a prenatal yoga class at 10 weeks. It is run by a woman with 7 kids who is also a doula and lactation consultant so in addition to being totally safe, it is very informative. I love seeing all the other pregnant ladies every week. But even if you can’t get a prenatal class, just make sure your instructor is well versed in what you can and cannot do and you’ll be fine. I don’t think there are a whole lot of moves that can be really damaging to your fetus. They are mostly obvious, like inversions aren’t so great when you are 30 weeks pregnant. I don’t think you could pay me to stand on my head right now. You will find that your balance is compromised, the weight of pregnancy makes things more difficult as you get further along, and once you have a belly its CRAZY – you have to adjust all your postures to “make room for baby”. Its really fun and a great form of excercise, plus its good preparation for labor (breathing, focus, relaxation). For me, it also helps you keep tabs on the changes you are experiencing and enhances the whole pregnancy experience.

Gentle Yoga is geat. There are heaps of books and DVDs specifically for pregnancy Yoga.We are alldiferent though so listen to your body and if doesnt feel right dont do it! It really does seem to help with calmness and focus in labour

There are certain yoga moves you can do and certain things you shouldn’t. My wife bought a DVD called “Prenatal Yoga” that had some light yoga and exercise. Our son and my wife are both healthy!

I knew a woman that loved jogging so much she did it until she had her child. Two days later she was at it again.
Here is my 2 cents (even though I’m a dude)
    1) talk to your doctor
    2) when your body says something, LISTEN
    3) Everyone is different, what does your inner sense tell you?
Some men and women (mostly women) have an acute understanding of what is right or seek the correct avenue to persue (a good example is the movie Erin Brauckovitch) { I DON’T KNOW HOW TO SPELL HER NAME, SORRY} w/out having any background on the event.
The real question is: What do you feel is right? Talk and share w/ those you trust.
    Congratulations and Good luck!!

I would call my doctor. Just to be on the safe side. But most of the time, they’ll tell you: If you was doing it before you got preggers then, it’s ok to still do. But I would call just to make sure…And congrats on the baby!!!

Better avoid yoga during pregnancy. Why take risk ?
